The Process

We shall discuss ideas for the portrait and your preferences for style, painting size, figure positions, intended display location, etc. We may also need to discuss clothing and background for the portrait. as well as any personal items that should appear.

Portraits can be done from life or photographs which may be provided by the client, or a professional photographer. The photos do need to be very high quality, and reveal the full range of tones in a sitters face. Photos taken with flash are rarely the quality required.  If local I  may also take some photographs. Ideally the photographs should capture characteristics and expressions which those close to the sitter would see as normal reflections of the sitters personality, character and life. 

Materials

Only the best archival quality materials are used & the workmanship of your painting is guaranteed. I can work on fine canvas or board. For larger paintings or those being shipped canvas or linen is preferable.. 

Time

Once started, the painting time can take anywhere between 3 to 16 weeks depending on complexity and drying time.

Oil Portrait Fees

The fees below are examples based on a single figure with a simple background. Final cost is set after consultation with the client about the specifics of the portrait

Not included in the fees are any travel, framing & shipping fees.

As per standard professional portrait practice a non-refundable payment of one third (33 1/3 %) of the total fee plus any agreed upon up front expenses is required prior to the commencement of the commission. The balance is due prior to shipping & upon acceptance of the finished portrait( if you are not local this will be done via the internet or photographs) .

The prices shown below are for some common sizes, but others are available depending on your needs.
