City & Urban Paintings of Sydney
Into The Light, Market Street, Sydney
Oil on Cradled Panel
Size 18 x 18 inches ( 45 x 45 cm) |
Cityscape capturing the luminous afternoon light in Market Street, Sydney looking west towards the old Gowings department store to the left on the corner with George Street, just behind the State Theatre. The phrase " Gone to Gowings" has now involved into slang meaning something or someone is irretrievably lost. For example a person has gone somewhere unknown and will never return, or an appliance has broken down and is unfixable.
The Gowings building still has the sign, with Topshop occupying the ground corner and the QT Hotel & Gowings Bar and Grill upstairs. Both the Hotel and Grill are both well worth a visit, very interesting & creative design with good quality meals in the grill.
